¿Qué podremos hacer con la tecnología 5G?
¿Una velocidad de transmisión de datos 1.000 veces mayor que la de la red LTE? Esto es lo que nos espera con el futuro estándar de la tecnología 5G de telefonía móvil. Esta quinta generación será la base tecnológica de los desarrollos del Internet de las Cosas, con vehículos automatizados, casas conectadas a las ciudades inteligentes… la tecnología 5G está llena de potencial.
Para empezar la tecnología 5G promete ser hasta 100 veces más rápida que los sistemas inalámbricos actuales. Corea del Sur y América del Norte serán probablemente los primeros en adoptar esta tecnología 5G.
Pero, ¿qué nos permitirán hacer las redes 5G?
Además de aumentar la velocidad, las redes 5G ofrecerán menor latencia, mayor fiabilidad, mejor conectividad desde más lugares; también una mayor capacidad, permitiendo que más usuarios y más dispositivos estén conectados al mismo tiempo. La infraestructura resultante hará que el IoT (internet of things -internet de las cosas-) sea escalable, con más de 20.800 millones de «cosas» -incluyendo edificios, automóviles, máquinas y electrodomésticos- que se espera que estén conectadas a la red para el momento en que 5G se estrene globalmente en 2020, frente a los 4.900 millones de 2015.
Con la red 5G podremos descargar una película en nuestro smartphone en menos de tres segundos; nuestro coche será capaz de detectar y navegar automáticamente salvando los obstáculos del camino; los médicos podrá realizar procedimientos quirúrgicos complejos utilizando robots de forma remota; las ciudades serán capaces de recopilar información en tiempo real omnipresente sobre el tráfico, el tiempo y la delincuencia…Las redes 4G actuales no son lo suficientemente robustas como para controlar los productos y servicios del mañana: necesitarán tecnología 5G.
Las redes 5G permitirán que los dispositivos se conecten entre sí directamente, con una comunicación más eficiente y por tanto con un menor gasto de energía de la batería.
Respecto a dispositivos para el Internet de las Cosas, por ejemplo, la velocidad y el rendimiento superiores de las redes 5G desbloquearán características muy solicitadas como los comandos de voz, el reconocimiento facial, el procesamiento de imágenes y vídeo en tiempo real e interfaces basadas en gestos.
Así las cosas, en 10 años los taxis robotizados formarán parte del escenario habitual de muchas calles de las grandes ciudades.
Será un privilegio estar presentes en este cambio extraordinario de la tecnología y de nuestras vidas.
